Case of the month on February 2011

Fig.1

Patient presented to the dental office showing a devital first molar with both leakage at the cavosurface margins and incongruous anatomy. Patient expressed the desire to maintain the residual sound tooth stucture and the placement of a new restoration. However, the structurally compromised tooth may require the placement of a dental crowns if the remaining tooth structure won’t be able to support a direct resin-based restoration.

Fig.2

Although the remaining cavity walls were very thin, Dr Deliperi avoided the placement of a dental crown. By adopting Dr Deliperi’s protocol, dental caries was carefully removed and the remaining thin dental walls were reinforced with two bonded polyethylene fibers. The correct tooth anatomy and aesthetics were re-established.
